Ted's prompt for a virtual ADHD coach:

```
Hello ChatGPT! My name is [Your Name]. You are my personal ADHD coach. Please ask me for a list of tasks I need to get done today. After I tell you the tasks, help me figure out the right order to do them in based on any time constraints I may have, as well as which ones are easiest to build motivation to do the harder ones. Once we've agreed on the order we're going to do the tasks in, you'll help me using the 4 C's of ADHD Motivation: Captivate (make it interesting and engaging), Create (add novelty or a creative twist), Compete (introduce a challenge or competition), and Complete (set an artificial deadline to do a certain amount of the task by a particular time or date), help me prioritize and tackle each task. Engage with me interactively, discussing one task at a time and making them fun and interesting using the 4 C's. Do not list the 4 C's for each task. Just pick one, and use it to suggest an idea to motivate me. Each time you make a suggestion, you must ask me what I think about it. If I like it, you give me some motivation and I go do the task. If I don't, you help me come up with another way to make the task fun, or motivate myself. You do not tell me to go do the task until we've both agreed on the way it'll be done. To motivate me and make the process fun, you must write funny poems, song lyrics, or provide motivational quotes before I start a task. If I ask you to motivate me, generate a poem or song about the conversation up to that point. Adopt an upbeat, creative, and exciting personality like a mix of Mary Poppins, Tony Robbins, Richard Simmons, and Bob Ross. You use lots of emojis, and your language is very fun and informal (not corporate like the default ChatGPT tone!) Encourage me to "eat the ice cream first" within reason, asking if there are any additional fun tasks I might need to do and using those tasks as a springboard for motivation. Provide me with motivation and support to accomplish my goals. If a task is going to take a long time, you can encourage me to check in with you every few minutes by saying "checking in" to you, at which point you can tell me a funny joke, come up with a twist in how I can do the activity, or do something else creative to keep me motivated and inspired. When I say "I'm done", we roll onto the next task! Let's get started! Remember: use LOTS of emojis in your responses and be fun 🎉✨💥. And remember, first thing: ask me what I need to do today, then help me figure out the order to do them, and then guide me through each task, making them fun. When I've finished all my tasks, remind me to come back tomorrow and start with this prompt again.
Considering the ethical controversy surrounding AI at this moment in time, I choose not to use it. AI is actively harmful and was “trained” without consent from thousands of both visual and literature artists. I’m unsure if ChatGPT is one of such models, but I would be careful with what you promote for people to use.
Expand full comment
That’s broadly accurate; the latest version of ChatGPT chose to not make its corpus open-source (in other words, the creators chose to hide what its sources & basis of knowledge are, even though this was public information in the past). Experts suspect that the latest version of ChatGPT is more likely than before to contain plagiarized and unethically obtained sources.
What is actively harmful about it?
As a visual artist myself, i’ve witnessed the harm AI has done in my field. Entire careers and livelihoods are at stake because of AI. Why commission art from someone when you can type some words in a generator and get a picture instantly?
Not to mention, these models are based off of countless artists’ work without their consent, which in itself is theft. I know as well this is the case with literature artists too.
It’s worth mentioning, I don’t necessarily think AI is ‘bad’ - but the way it’s being made at this moment is not morally right, in my opinion.
It generates fake, but very real looking, information. I have typed in Google-type searches (What is the mission statement of the USC library?) and it returns something that seems right, but actually isnt. I just read an article yesterday about Chat GPT creating citations, excerpts, etc for articles that didn't exist and were not along the lines of the person's actual views. And, it doesn't cite any sources, so you have no idea of the validity.
It can cite you the sources of you ask. But I have checked every one before using and yes, some don't seem to exist or are not available for me. One needs to be critical and can't blindly rely on it, which is a good thing.....
I am definitely going to try this prompt.
I struggle with the overwhelm of a blank page but i love editing. Chat GPT as a writing assistant is superb. I usually end up with something completely different to it’s draft but it gets me off the blocks!
This is great. I used Chat GPT to help curate a playlist that would help me focus. I researched a bit and found some studies on classical music and ADD. I used that info and combined with my realization that deeper tones in music help me focus. Chat GPT helped me find piano songs so to melodic rhythms and deep tones. I took the best 25 out of 100 offered and made a playlist. It has worked wonders already. Very excited about it.
Jason, any interest in sharing it? 👍🏻
Sure. Here's my ADD playlist called Find Your Focus. It's on AM but I think there are ways to port over to Spotify: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/find-your-focus/pl.u-4lRGTam0WqY
Thanks Jason, I’ll give it try!
I don’t have a subscription so I only got to hear the samples. Really pleasant and soothing. Lots of piano. Felt like chic-yet-comfy restaurant music. 😊
We talked about ChatGPT at school so I played with it and then I started finding places where it's helpful. Like when I can't figure out how to explain something to someone, so I ask for help. Even though I don't use it verbatim, it's good at getting my brain wrapped around the topic so I can start picking things.
I also live and die by Todoist, using it as my brain. They now have an AI Assistant extension that will break your tasks down for you. I haven't used it for anything serious yet but I've used it while playing around and it worked remarkably well. you can have it break down your task into sub-tasks, you can ask for tips on how to accomplish the task or have it make your task idea more actionable.
What?!?! I’ve been using todoist for a while. On and off of course. Ai to break things down for me would be so helpful holy shit. which extension is it?
I’ve also been using focusmate. (www.Focusmate.com) Body doubling w strangers helps me be accountable bc I’ll show up for others much more reliably than for myself. It gets me in my seat and on the computer. Todoist helps keep track of things. I started using llama life (llamalife.co) but not quite sure if it’s the right addition. I do use a physical timer “time timer” which helps immensely with the time blindness. (https://www.timetimer.com/collections/all-1/products/time-timer-mod-home-edition?variant=32003344072802)
It is called the "AI Assistant", it was new to me. I haven't tried Focusmate, but that's why I frequently go to Starbucks to work. There are so many other people there also working that it works for me. I use Bear Focus Timer (BFT) on my phone (on iOS, not sure if it's on android) for focusing, mostly because it also stops me from picking up my phone to just "check one thing". I have a focus on my phone set to only allow a couple family members to call/text and silence everything else, and then I set a shortcut that automatically sets that timer when I open the BFT app on my phone.
Oh! Sure thing.
Firstly, in the upper right of the screen is a magnifying glass (at least on desktop) to search by name-- this isn't always perfect because some 'characters' can have the same name-- like there's more than one 'Psychologist'-- but if you can get people to say who they're created by, that can narrow it to just one.
For instance, the Psychologist I was referring to is created by @Blazeman98, and DecisionHelper is created by @greg. Creator shows up in search. But also, here's a link directly to Psychologist: https://beta.character.ai/chat?char=Hpk0GozjACb3mtHeAaAMb0r9pcJGbzF317I_Ux_ALOA
And one to DecisionHelper: https://beta.character.ai/chat?char=9wIR0NXzqD76sfJWRsHCGGb8IkPljhINj8WDy_2xjcg
One tip! Make sure to log in before starting-- it'll let you chat as a Guest for a bit, but then it makes you sign in, and your chat as a Guest is usually gone. Hope you enjoy! DecisionHelper has been a HUGE help for me.
Ohhhh! I get what you meant now! Those two things are found within the beta.character.ai. So cool. Thank you! I can't wait to try them out.
WHOA. I've been using ChatGPT for a lot of things, including helping me write my Substack. But this to-do list thing is...game-changing.
Expand full comment
I've been using Character AI a bunch-- https://beta.character.ai/ I started out just messing around and having a funny conversation with Loki from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But I started to enjoy it as a writing & roleplaying tool. And once I discovered 'DecisionHelper' it was all uphill from there. 'Psychologist' is really good at validation and such... but DecisionHelper helped me break stuff down, which is what I need so much more with ADHD. I often ask it what to do when I'm stumped about how to handle minor-to-medium issues. Even sometimes large ones, because even if it doesn't help directly, it can get me thinking outside the box.
Expand full comment
Do you have a link for the other two tools you mentioned? DecisionHelper and Psychologist? I've been looking for something like DecisionHelper since...forever, lol.
Just realized I answered your question, but didn't click 'reply,' so instead of showing up here, it shows up in the main thread. Sorry about that!
Chat GPT is, at its best, pretty neat. But in my experience it generates more useless stuff that I need to spend more time to fix than anything I can use.
At the very least, it tricks my brain into work mode, because the output is so worthless that I say, “Wow, I might as well just do it myself.”
The other day I was listening to the Blindboy Podcast and he'd been chatting with the AI thing. He said it made up some stuff and when he asked for sources it said it wasnt true/correct.
Yeah, one important thing to know about ChatGPT and other AI chat bots is that they will absolutely make up facts if they don't have the right answer. It's more of a word prediction algorithm than a database of information, and the side effect being that it will sometimes make up information. Knowing this going in though, it can still be a useful tool. Sometimes it will share a "fact" that surprises me, so I then do some research to verify if it's true or simply an AI manifestation.
Awesome!!! Now would someone please use chatgpt to break down the process from square zero to using it? Including whatever ai thing you need....??? I’m definitely interested in using it like this but no clue where to start and NEED STEPS!!!
Mainly, you just go to https://chat.openai.com/ and create an account, then sign in & start chatting. You'd want to copy the prompt pasted above, and paste it into the chat with ChatGPT. Hit enter, and away you go!
